Tarca family

Tarca family

About us

We’re a two-working-parent household in San Bruno looking for an amazing part-time nanny who can grow with our family. This role focuses primarily on our 5.5-year-old daughter, who is starting kindergarten this year, though we also have a 1-year-old son who attends full-time daycare in town. Our home is pet-free, and we place a big emphasis on outdoor play and nature exploration, so we’d love to find someone who shares those values.

About our kids

Our daughter Laney is goofy, high-energy, and a total social butterfly. She is in her element outdoors—whether she is at the beach, bouncing on the trampoline, swinging, scootering, or “cooking” and doing “experiments” with water, spices, soap, or plant materials. She’s a collector at heart, always finding treasures here and there, and her growing crystal collection is one of her prized possessions.

She is quite imaginative and creative, but generally she prefers active play over sitting still for crafts (though play dough is usually a hit). She is also very musical and sings a lot, so we’d love someone who can in part help cultivate that interest.

Because she is so inquisitive, she doesn’t just accept rules at face value—she will question authority. She can be impulsive, sensitive, and very stubborn, so she thrives with a caregiver who is comfortable holding firm, loving boundaries. (A quick heads up: she is very into food and sweets and will often claim she is starving when she is actually just bored!)

Our son Cy (who you would only care for occasionally) is incredibly sweet and loves to be held, but is also great at playing independently. He is an active walker who is starting to run and test out his climbing skills. He adores following his big sister around and shares her love for the outdoors. He does occasionally fight naptime and generally the mid-morning nap is the most successful.

Right now, his favorite indoor activity is exploring—opening drawers and cabinets to take absolutely everything out. His current obsession is drinking receptacles – cups, water bottles, and the like, and he’s not above taking an empty seltzer can out of the recycling bin. Generally, he’s a good eater and loves milk, too.

Schedule

  • Start date: Mid-August
  • Days: Monday through Friday
  • Daily hours: 1:30 PM – 5:30 PM
  • Total hours: Approximately 20 hours per week (guaranteed on a weekly basis during the school year, from mid-August to late May).
  • School breaks: We are looking for someone who has some flexibility during school/daycare closures, as hours may increase or decrease during those times. Dates to consider:
    • August 10-12, 2026 (Laney)
    • October 12 / Indigenous People’s Day (Laney and Cy)
    • December 21-23 / Winter break (Laney and Cy)
    • January 4-5 / Winter break (Laney and Cy)
    • Friday, February 5 / full day (Laney)
    • Late May – mid August / Summer break (Laney)

Bonus availability: Willingness to provide occasional night and/or weekend care (offered at an increased hourly rate because it would be for both kids).

Key responsibilities

  • Pick up Laney daily M-F from Monte Verde Elementary, a less than 10-minute walk from our home.
  • Drive to and supervise Laney at local extracurricular activities or playdates (these will not be every day).
  • Plan and engage in intentional, outdoor-focused learning play with Laney (e.g., hiking, trips to the beach, nature exploration).
  • Prepare healthy after-school snacks for Laney.
  • Occasional: Pick up Cy from his San Bruno daycare between 5 and 5:30 pm – would be ad hoc and planned in advance!
  • Bonus/optional: Help get dinner started in the late afternoon.

Requirements and qualifications
Background, experience, and genuine interest in Early Childhood Education (ECE) – prospective or former teachers welcome!
Highly preferred: experience or familiarity with Reggio-Emilia, Waldorf, and/or outdoor education philosophies
Valid driver’s license, a clean driving record, and a reliable vehicle for activity drop-offs and occasional daycare pickups (we will provide car seats)
Current CPR and First Aid certification
Up to date vaccinations, including flu and Covid-19
Strong references from previous childcare employers
Energy and enthusiasm for actively engaging in physical, outdoor activities
Willingness to sign and adhere to work agreement

Compensation and benefits

  • Rate: $30 – $40 per hour gross, depending on experience (with a higher rate for occasional weekend care)
  • Payroll method: we’re committed to paying legally on the books (W-2) but are happy to issue pay via cash, Venmo, Zelle, or whatever is preferred with a formal pay stub each week.
  • Guaranteed weekly hours during the school year (breaks to be discussed and planned well in advance)
  • Mileage reimbursement for driving children
  • Paid holidays (Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Day, New Years Day, MLK Day, President’s Day, Memorial Day)
  • 5 days (40 hours) paid sick time annually
  • Up to 2 weeks (40-50 hours) of paid time off annually – 1 week of your choice, 1 week of our choice
